Jump to Specs out the box - The Dewalt DW717 is a 10-inch, double-bevel sliding compound miter saw. The big brother to the DW715 and DW 716 from.

Miter Angle (Left): 60 Degrees Max. Miter Angle (Right): 52 Degrees Positive Miter Detents: 7 Slide System: Dual Rail Voltage: 120V. The evening I received the saw I evaluated it. The left and right fences were found aligned with each other (no visible gaps between straight edge and fence, the upper and lower fence sections aligned with each other (again no visible gaps between straight edge and fence) and the fences nearly perfectly square to the table (again no visible gap). Squareness was checked from one end of the fence to the other on both sides of blade and the entire length was found to be consistent using a precision machinist square.

I found the lateral movement of the blade acceptable and was able to make a nice clean square on 12” wide board in horizontal mode and equally square on a 4” vertical cut against the fence. Slide worked well but could be more smooth. I will take the accuracy over glass smooth though.

Dust collection is horrible, even with shop vac hooked up. My perception is that the Bosch CM10GD collects more dust with its bag alone then the DW717 did with the vacuum attached. The saw was not aligned when I received it but I found it very easily to dial it in accurately. I experienced predicable return to zero bevels and miter in multiple attempts, something the Bosch would not do. Now the downside. During my hour or so of testing on its first day it was clear something was wrong.

There was a constant smell of burning plastic within minutes of use, but I continued the physical evaluation. Day two I called DeWalt tech support. They could not tell me what was normal, but in the end they suggested I to return the saw to place of purchase and order a new one. No other solution offered. My day two tested showed that the metal flange on the motor reaches 125 degrees F, and the belt pulley reaches 350 degrees F. You bet the saw is going back, before the fire starts.

DeWalt, it would have been better if you offered to send me a replacement saw and a call tag to return the defective saw. I own and like DeWalt tools, but don’t make your customers pay for your poor quality control decisions. Here is hoping that the replacement saw is equally as accurate and not the fire hazard the first one is. If you were only familiar with the DEWALT DW717 Double Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw‘s capacities, you might think the “ 10-inch” in the title of this page should actually be “ 12-inch,” but this is a 10 inch slider that actually thinks it’s a 12 incher, with impressive 90° and 45° crosscut capacities of 2 x 12 dimensional lumber, and 2 x 14 when using it’s back fence feature. Vertical cut capacities are also impressive. The DW717 is a real workhorse, driven by a powerful 15 AMP motor, with lightweight ergonomic design, cam lock miter handle, tall sliding fence system, 7 bevel and 11 miter detents, in addition to it’s durability and ease-of-use. Contents. DEWALT DW717 Features The DW717 is equipped with an array of useful features both large and small, and it’s those little extras that make it a standout. An electronic brake, adjustable stainless steel miter detent plate, sliding fences both left and right, and accessories that extend productivity all make the operator’s life easier.

DW717 Power, Durability, Ease-Of-Use The saw’s 15 AMP motor puts out 4,000 RPM through a V-belt drive to power through dense hardwoods, and it’s electronic brake contributes to both safety and productivity, stopping the blade within five seconds of releasing the trigger. The dual horizontal steel rails combine with linear ball bearings and an innovative clamping mechanism for smooth, precise sliding action.

The durable machined base fence support makes sure the fence stays square, while improved ergonomics in the form of a horizontal handle keep controls operator friendly. A user commented that this saw is definitely “ lefty friendly,” referring to the trigger placement.

A spindle lock is provided for easier blade changes, a lock down pin helps avoid damage during transport, and a hole in the trigger for a padlock keeps your DW717 secure. Wide Bevel / Miter Range With Precision Adjustments The 0°-48° left and right bevel range combined with a miter range of 60° left and 52° right give the DEWALT DW717 tremendous versatility, made even greater by the miter detent override which allows you to precisely dial in those angles that are oh-so-close to a detent hole. The cam lock miter handle locks down the angle fast, and if the miter scale gets out of square, the stainless steel miter detent plate can be adjusted to bring it back to true.

The seven bevel and eleven miter detents make setting standard angles quick and repeatable, and the included material clamp keeps your workpiece from moving during a cut. Dust Collection Dust collection on this DEWALT is not what it could be, according to user reviews.

It was pointed out that when the saw head is lowered during a cut, the dust collection tube is pointing north of 45 degrees, making collection with a dust bag difficult. Most users who employed a shop vac or other vacuum system felt they had no great problem with dust collection. So what do users have to say about the DEWALT DW717? The saw has received excellent reviews from users, and is currently rated 4.6 out of 5 by reviewers on Amazon.com. Here are some of their comments:. “I’m a professional trim carpenter and I own alot of blue, red and yellow tools. This has got to be the best I’ve ever bought.”.

“Out of the box, everything was dead-on accurate, and at least if it wasn’t, Dewalt lets you make the adjustments yourself.”. “It’s been commented here that dust control is sub-par but I’ve had the DW717 hooked up to a Fein Vac w/ autostart and everything worked just great.”. “The saw has a lot of power and hasn’t struggled with anything I’ve thrown at it.”. “This saw is awesome! I make my living as a finish carpenter and this is one of the best saws I have ever purchased, and I have bought quite a few in my career.”.

Dewalt Dw717 Miter Saw Reviews

“It is simple to setup, erognomic to use, and very accurate. Plus, for those who take their saws to the worksite, the DW717 seems lighter or at least better balanced to carry than the competitors.”. “Huge cut capacity. I had thought I would need a 12″ slider to build my upper kitchen cabinets but this 10″ has more than enough capacity.”. “The miter detent override works great and it’s extremely easy to dial in very minor adjustments of less than.25 degree by hand.”. “The bevel detent system also works great and is accessible on the left and right hand side of the saw which is great.” Accessories (sold separately) for the saw range from the DW7187 Adjustable Miter-Saw Laser System and DWS7085 Miter Saw LED Worklight System ( See DWS7085 in action!) to the DWX723 Heavy Duty Miter Saw Stand. You can also get the DW7080 Work Support Extension, DW7082 Clamp (similar to the one included), and the DW7084 Crown Molding Stops.

NOTE: Various descriptions of these accessories do NOT list the DW717 among the saws they will fit, however, all of the accessories above are listed on pages 4-5 of the as being appropriate for the saw. What Are The Cons? Dust collection, as noted above, was the major complaint. If you are able to use a shop vac or other dust collection system, or you use the saw outside, this becomes much less of a factor. Some users found the stock blade to be poor quality, others not.

Dewalt Dw717 Owners Manual

The difference could be a change in the quality of stock miter saw blades over the years, or just different uses – framing versus woodworking. A very few minor complaints ranged from difficulty getting at the blade guard screws to change the blade, to wishing the table were a bit larger. What’s In The Box?.
