The left and right fences were found aligned with each other (no visible gaps between straight edge and fence, the upper and lower fence sections aligned with each other (again no visible gaps between straight edge and fence) and the fences nearly perfectly square to the table (again no visible gap). Squareness was checked from one end of the fence to the other on both sides of blade and the entire length was found to be consistent using a precision machinist square.
I found the lateral movement of the blade acceptable and was able to make a nice clean square on 12” wide board in horizontal mode and equally square on a 4” vertical cut against the fence. Slide worked well but could be more smooth. I will take the accuracy over glass smooth though.
Dust collection is horrible, even with shop vac hooked up. My perception is that the Bosch CM10GD collects more dust with its bag alone then the DW717 did with the vacuum attached. The saw was not aligned when I received it but I found it very easily to dial it in accurately. I experienced predicable return to zero bevels and miter in multiple attempts, something the Bosch would not do. Now the downside. During my hour or so of testing on its first day it was clear something was wrong.
There was a constant smell of burning plastic within minutes of use, but I continued the physical evaluation. Day two I called DeWalt tech support. They could not tell me what was normal, but in the end they suggested I to return the saw to place of purchase and order a new one. No other solution offered. My day two tested showed that the metal flange on the motor reaches 125 degrees F, and the belt pulley reaches 350 degrees F. You bet the saw is going back, before the fire starts.
DeWalt, it would have been better if you offered to send me a replacement saw and a call tag to return the defective saw. I own and like DeWalt tools, but don’t make your customers pay for your poor quality control decisions. Here is hoping that the replacement saw is equally as accurate and not the fire hazard the first one is.
