I am serious about converting, this is not a troll post. I apologize to xk divination for offending his delicate sensibilities or possibly trangressing an unwritten Jaguar law with my (apparently blasphemous) post. To the others who responded, thank you. As I posted, I have always loved Jaguar's lines but I have hesitated because, in my opinion, a stick gives so much more control during spirited driving.

I thought that if euro Jaguars have manual transmissions (and I don't know that they do, thats why I am here), then someone has probably converted one stateside. I'm not trying to re-engineer the car nor spend a ton of money.

If it can't be done properly with a Jaguar transmission, I wouldn't want to try converting. Okay, I did a little digging to see what I could find, as I’ve come across this topic before. It has been done a few times, and successfully at that, but for some reason I have a rather high figure in my head, around 25k. As I remember, the reason had to do with the computers on the car that had to be changed because the components currently on the car don’t allow for them to simply be updated, i.e flashed, to accommodate a manual system, which included the ABS and traction control. So it’s not just a question of plunking in a manual transmission you have to build a whole new system from the ground up.

I’ve seen prototypes being driven on British television with manual transmissions, which had their computers constantly flashing warning light due to the lack of proper feed back from the transmission. In the US there is Rocketsports, which builds the American Le Manns Jaguars, (aka Trans-Am series,) who have built prototypes for Jaguar, namely the XK-RS. Then there’s Mark Trenoweth from down under in Australia, who also builds manual Xks for racing. On the other hand there is Chip Foose of California who could also do the work, and fix any design issue you have with the cars design while he was at it. Another place to go ask their opinion is a company called The Driven Man, based out of Johnson City, Tennessee, (423) 773-9789. They do primarily XJS manual conversions kits, but I’m sure they’ve been asked about XK8s.

So, they probably have an answer for you. Again, if it was quick and cheap to do, there would have been kits available a long time ago, as this is not an uncommon request. However, if this is something near and dear to your heart, I say, pursue it. And while you are at it talk the people listed above and tell them what you want, they may decide to help you out. (Another thing to consider is that if you really like Jag engineering, but want a Jag with manual and every possible performance upgrade you should have a look at a 2003 DB7 GT. DB7 are built on XJS chassis. In fact the XK8 retains most of the XJS chassis geometry and weight distribution.

In a way the DB7 and XK8 are kissing cousins.) Happy hunting. I do not understand why you feel any post I made was a 'troll' post. I gave my opinion that from my experience with Jags, F1MIAMI would not be happy with a Jag if he would only drive manual transmission cars and that the conversion on an XK8/R would be very expensive and not that rewarding - I consider the Jag Xks GT cars not sports cars. I NEVER called anyone a 'troll' - look at my posts. Of course you can convert an XK8/R to a manual transmission, I don't care. With enough money you can do anything.

I was just trying to save somone from spending a lot of money and ending up with something that would not be satisfactory (to him). I have owned a 95 XJS and currently own a 99Xk8 so I have about 10 years experience with Jaguars. Sorry if I offended anybody with my advise - just trying to be helpful. I think you will see this if you read any post I have made. Xk divination-I apologize, sincerely this time (not the sarcastic apology I posted before)! I interpret a troll post to be one that someone makes to offend/rile/insult etc. I mistakenly thought that you were being chummy with V8 cat and commenting that I had submitted a troll post.

Thanks for the back up. V8 cat-no offense taken. You have an opinion, which is what I asked for. To everyone else, especially Vic and Sidvaga-thanks for the info. I think I'll try to find a mid 90's S with a manual box. The conversions were all in the $5k range, which means that it would probably end up costing even more, and was not something Jag had originally put in their cars. Doesn't look like he's trolling to me.

More like you're being a fanboy. I found this post because I, also, would only be interested in the XK8 if it had a manual transmission.

Manual Override Cosmetics

In fact, if you use a search engine to check, you'll see that reviews by automotive magazines also say the same thing, i.e. 'if there was one thing we'd add to the mix, it would be an option for a manual transmission'. I believe someone already stated this: that it's simple economics, product demographics. The target audience has loads of cash. When the XK8 first came out, I was awed by the drop-dead gorgeous styling. And (in my opinion) it has held the test of time. Not sure about the updated 'squared off' styling; reminds me of what was done to the Viper:( Things to look up on Wikipedia: Troll, Fanboy, Threadnomancy.

My post might be considered threadnomancy:).

The gear shift paddles can be configured to be active in both D and S or active in S only, via the Vehicle Settings menu. Sequential shift can be effective when rapid acceleration and engine braking are required. A gear shift indicator warning lamp illuminates briefly at the recommended (up-shift) gear change point. If the gear selector remains in the D position, temporary use of the manual gear selection mode is held while the driver is accelerating, decelerating, cornering or continuing to request gear shift changes, via the steering wheel paddles.
