Both have their downsides, but together they are comprehensive enough to finish practically any job or service that you may need to complete. The beginning of the book has a nice section on general maintenance. If you really car about your car and do the work yourself this is a must have book. If your going to do any type of work this makes the book makes tasks easier with simple step by step instructions. Also it has bold text with warning to maybe keep you from screwing things up. I do still read the whole section ahead first before starting any work just to make sure I'm clear.
I bought this specifically to aid in the replacement of a cylinder head after my time chain guide broke and the valves when head on with the pistons. It took me through every step I needed. Only thing I didn't like was the section about the oil pump it told how to inspect it but did not give tolerances. The pump worked before.
